Re: [RC] bits and stops!! - Susan Garlinghouse, DVMChampion reiners stop from a dead run ON A LOOSE REIN!! Almost all can stop their horses with NOTHING on the horse's head. <snip> My advice is to look up a GOOD reining trainer. Their horses can do ANYTHING including, but not limited to Dressage. Renie Yes, those stops are pretty impressive. However, if anyone is going to utilize a reining trainer (or other discipline that emphasizes very fast stops or turns), ask to see the bits on their wall used during training that stop. Colorado has a lot of western horses and for the relatively few reining horses I've seen in my limited clinical experience, a disproportionate number from "top" reining barns have tongues that have been cut almost in half. When I comment on it, a lot of owners say, that's just the way they come back from so-and-so's barn...but he always wins, so that's where my horses go. Good stop or not, that's not how I want my horses to learn to listen. This isn't meant to specifically bash reining trainers...just an observation from my own very limited experience wish I hope is not the norm. Just a caveat to consider.
