Re: [RC] bits and stops!! - Renie BurnettDr. Sue G has a very good point; There ARE reiners who utilize everything from bits with small chain mouthpieces, or high correction ports or anything in between. I was specifically talking about what I have learned from MY trainer...she awesomely puts a beautiful, soft response, including the stop, on horse after horse that she trains. She uses a snaffle to start all, after one or two rides in a side pull or rope halter. She is a reiner. However, at her barn I have seen Dressage horses, jumpers, and MANY endurance horses that had no "MOUTH" on them. Back they go to the snaffle and they learn it right, and go on to become very good at what they do. She, her instructors, and her students learn to teach their horses the cues they need, along with balance, to stop without pulling on the bits. I know; I have trained 3 horses with her, they all stop beautifully. The point I am trying to make is that it is, IN THE PROPER HANDS AND WITH PROPER TRAINING, NOT the BIT that makes the horse stop. That is why well trained horses can stop from a gallop with nothing in their mouths or on their heads.
