RE: [RC] [Guest] night riding - Ridecamp Moderator
Hi Faith,
I use three glowsticks (either the yellow or green color as they are a bit
brighter) on the horse's breastcollar. Yes you really can trot, canter,
and even gallop at night. You learn to have a greater "faith" in your
horse and his ability to see in the dark much better than you can. I live
in Virginia and have used this method on the big OD 100 where in June the
undergrowth is frequently so bad that you cannot even see the ground in the
dark. You simply ask your walking horse if he can go any faster (trot or
canter?), and if he can, he will! Just stay loose in the saddle since in
deep undergrowth you don't know if the trail goes up or down, left or
right. Your horse can see or he won't go any faster. It really gives you
a new outlook on your horse and you will find you trust him so much you
tend to let him pick his own way even in the daylight too. Try it! It is
an unforgetable experience and not to be missed!
Have fun,
Becky
