>At
a ride recently on a picket line, I watched a horse try to scratch his ear with
his hind hoof and in the process get his pastern hung up in the rope.
Fortunately, we were close to that campsite and started running toward the horse
when we saw it happen. and seeing us run towards him, the horse didn't panic and
his owner rescued him without much more than a rope burn to deal with. I
guess in a case like that the plastic buckle will break?
Far too
often, from what I've observed, the running toward the horse either creates the
panic, or if the horse is already panicked, it intensifies the panic.
Better to walk to the horse talking in soothing tones to let him know that being
hung up is ok and that you are coming to do good things to
him.
