Re: [RC] Stallions - Heidi Smith

Just one last thought, Jessica.
If you are going to keep a horse as a stallion, I believe it is only
fair to him that he be bred occasionally

WHY? Many stallions don't breed in nature, and are perfectly fine. I've
taken older stallions on who have never bred at all until they are in their
teens, and they are fine. Our stallions often go 3 or 4 years without
breeding mares, and then may get to breed half a dozen in one year. And
they are fine. I have two stallions here age 7 who have yet to breed mares.
They are fine. I know of NO reason whatsoever to breed a stallion just once
a year "just for the sake of breeding him"--medical, emotional, or
otherwise. There is more such mythology out there surrounding stallion
management than Carter has little pills.... (Do you breed your MARES once a
year, just so they can have the fun of it??)

Heidi
