Re: [RC] beet pulp and colic: Susan G? - Susan GarlinghouseAmber's comments about beet-pulp and colic makes > Is it possible that a soup of fruit, water and beet pulp, left sitting long enough on a warm day, might ferment if and possibly result in a belly-ache? Susan G - any thoughts? It might, depending on heat and so on. I don't think it goes "bad" per se, as in mold, etc, but the by-products of fermentation might create some gassiness. You can usually sniff a bag of soaked beet pulp and tell when it's started fermenting---hard to describe, just sort of a yeasty, acidy sort of odor. Not far off from the Budweiser brewery down the road, actually. <g> The soup of carrots, apples and beet pulp is still good stuff, but it might be worth it to use the shredded beet pulp, pack it up dry and only add the water at the vet check. The shreds usually soak up the water pretty quickly, wouldn't be a bad idea for the checks more than a few hours out from the start. I haven't caught all of this thread, but beet pulp is also a lot more likely to cause some gas if the horse isn't normally getting it at home. That soluble fiber is highly fermentable and can do a number if he's not used to it. If you don't feed it at home---don't feed it at a ride.
