Re: [RC] [RC] loin rubbing - DeAnn Schnepple

Certainly spring shedding *COULD* cause some problems, but I've seen loin rubbing on horses in the middle of summer too. I've tried the treeless saddle for one training ride and I think I'll stick to my ortho flex. I didn't have the loin rubbing with my horse, but he's a nice short-backed, well put together horse. I just prefer the ortho flex. To each their own. It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round. That's why there are so many saddle makers to choose from.

We were fitting a horse that would get some loin rubbing - primarly in the spring when the winter coat was sheading. We checked the saddle with a pressure pad to make sure there wasn't a saddle fit issue ( or rider imbalance issue ) and there wasn't. One day I followed this horse down the trail and he had a combination of a overstride of about a foot and a very loose movement in the hind end. This causes a lot of movement of the loin area under the saddle and this was the cause of the rubbing.

A second light weight pad solved the problem quite nicely.

Just an observation. I've had very good luck with Ortho Flex saddles

(I've

owned 3 now) and never have had loin rubbing.

Actually, vetting rides, I've seen a fair amount of loin rubbing with just
about any weight of rider. And from what I can see, it has a lot more to do
with a combo of how the horse moves and saddle fit. Back to Lynne G's
observations on conformation....
