Re: [RC] 2 Yr. old, feeding ??????? - Susan GarlinghousePlease re-read the posts from a few days ago regarding 'the nutritional guide to lameness'. I can't stress enough how much I encourage feeding a balanced feed specifically formulated for babies rather than a pound of this and a dab of that---you can get away with that for adults, but you really do needs to 'cross your tees and dot your i's' when feeding babies. Without crunching a lot of numbers, I'm concerned about multiple potential problems with your current ration, including insufficient lysine, calcium, copper and zinc. Substituting beet pulp and oil in for part of the grian ration won't correct any of those problems and might make them worse. Growth problems aren't as critical in a two-year-old, but any existing problems from earlier growth spurts can still be affected by current nutrition. My very strong advice would be to skip the beet pulp and oil and feed your colt a mix specifically formulated for young horses. If its convenient to feed one mix to everyone, foal pellets won't hurt the adult horses a bit. *Please* re-read the above cited post as to maximum amounts of grain to feed per day based on mature estimated body weight and be sure to pay attention to teeth and worming schedules as well. :-) Good luck, Susan G ----- Original Message ----- From: "Laurie Durgin" <ladurgin@xxxxxxx> To: <Ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2003 12:28 PM Subject: [RC] 2 Yr. old, feeding ??????? After reading have decided to try and get my colt to get his extra calories from more beet pulp/oil and less from grain. He has never gotten more than 1.5% grain for bodyweight. Situation is this: on hilly paddock, no grass to speak of(shares with 4 other horses)Round bale hay, bermuda the last 8 months (changes to fescue/bermuda in spring/summer).The bermuda change this winter put weight on everyone, so have been trimming their grain ration. Colt was getting 4.5 lb. grain 2x a day(down from 5.5 lb. )as he started to get close to fleshy.Have cut that ration of grain to about 3lb, currently 2x a day and about 1 lb. beet pulp and a couple ounces of oil. ?????Do I need to add any kind of multivitamin)?,grain has some a,e,biotin, yeast in it.(Denhams Showtime 11%, I think). How much beetpulp/oil can ,or should I subsitute for in a growing youngster? (I can figure the arabs and the tb, but am not sure the colt is getting what he needs or too much). Can't leave free choice beet plup out as the arabs will get tubby. So I feed 2x a day , plus leave hay out 24 hr. thanks, Laurie and Rascal(Honey, Champ and Scout the baby _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam?
