Call whatever university with an ag department is in your area or region and
ask to speak to the extension specialist regarding pasture grasses.  As
you've already figured out, there are a lot of variables for every region,
and the local specialist will give you much better information as to what
grows well in your area.

As to weed killers, I can't say.  I'm pretty sure a lot of the more common
water-based sprays degrade fairly rapidly in sunlight and are considered
safe within a few hours of being sprayed.

My distance horses will be getting new pasture planted
this spring. I live in Iowa and am wondering what mix
of pasture grass types I should use. I've been surfing
the net and it's so much more complicated than I
thought - life spans and seeding methods and soil ph,
etc etc. I don't know if the advertised mixes for this
area are what I want. Labels brag about "high sugar"
and legume volume, and I don't 'think' I want either
of those(?) I just want palatable hardy grasses, or if
I do add a clover for the nitrogen value, should I use
white or red? Susan G are you out there???
