[RC] re: photosensitivity - Teresa Van HoveFound the following link listing meds that can cause photosensitivity: http://www.paulkelly.on.ca/photo.htm Of interest to those who take ibuprofen or naproxen (alleve) to help get thru rides is that they can increase photosensititivity. And most of us are out in the sun between 10-3 at rides. Cripes maybe we all need to be investing in sun-shield clothing. I have noticed that my hands will sunburn if I dont wear gloves or slather them often with sunscreen during a long ride. Normal long sleeved shirt and long visor on helmet, with sunscreen on face tends to be sufficient for me otherwise. That website also recomends to avoid sunscreens with paba, which I've done anyway as I've had troubles with my skin being sensitive to whats put on it. I buy the kids or babies hypo-allergenic sunscreens in spf 40-50 - for some reason products that are supposed to be formulated for the face tend to irritate mine. Found a neat product that should work for making riding clothes more sun protective its Rit Sun Guard (on seriouslyshady.com ) Says it wont work on 100% polyester or acrylic fabrics, but its supposed to increase 'UPF' to 30 - says a plain tee is 5. dark denim blue jeans have a good UPF according to an article on the site, so all those folks riding in blue jeans instead of stretchy riding breeches have an advantage in sun protection on the rest of us. -- Teresa Van Hove Associate Scientist GST/UCAR vanhove@xxxxxxxx --------------------------------- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
