Re: [RC] Director at Large - Truman Prevatt
Lynne,
As usual you are right on target. There are numerous regional and local
organizations. There is FERA, GERA, SEDRA, SERA, DBDR, Old Dominion,
Western States, FHA, PNER, ECTRA, UMECTRA, Quicksilver, MERA, TERA -
just to name a few. On top of that there are local riding clubs. These
are the organizations that are providing the clinics for new riders.
These are the people (both endurance and CTR) that are supporting the
local ride managers. These are the people on the ground working with
land managers to open new trails and horse camps. These are the people
supplying the labor to clear trails so we can have rides.
There are the ride managers - without them no rides and no need for an
AERC BOD. There are the volunteers who provide valuable support to the
ride mangers. There are the vets who give up their weekend with the
family to come out and camp in the rain and look at our horses.
No I don't think you can say no one gives a damn. There are a lot of
people that do give a damn - independent of their desire to run for DAL,
and they are the ones mentioned about They are out there doing the
"heavy lifting" for endurance riding.

I find it amazing that out of 5863 members in the AERC that
there are only nine persons running for Director at Large
positions. That means that only 0.15% of the members are
interested in how the Conference runs. You might say that no
body gives a damn.

Aux contraire, cher Bob! May I offer some other conclusions than your
last sentence?
Some of us give back to the sport in other ways:
Some prefer working at the local level, offering rides, without which
there would be no AERC.
Some are active in regional organizations or CTR groups.
Some volunteer at several rides a year.
Some mentor other riders, whether formally or informally.
Some breed and train horses for our sport.
Some vet rides.
Some get their businesses to sponsor rides.
Some are so inexperienced that they are still getting a handle on how
to participate at all.
Some struggle to attend rides at all, with their work and family
schedules.
And yes, some just ride their horses.
Some lack people skills and/or the ability to discuss and reach
compromises or consensus.
*You know what I wonder?
Take the subset of current AERC members, whose AERC numbers are under
10,000. That's the experience base of the organization, IMHO. How
many riders does this total? Subtract the ones who have served in the
past. What is that number?
Those are the ones I'd like to consider serving the organization as a
DAL providing all of those reasons listed above aren't their raison
d'etre. (Je ne parle pas Francais!)
