Re: [RC] Pigeon's Disease?? - Bette Lamore

I agree with you, Merryben. I believe I said that although you can give antibiotics, lance etc., my opinion was to isolate and drain and keep Icthanol on it. The antibiotics seemed to make the disease last longer--- no help at all in the few cases that I allowed the vet to give them. Same thing with the lancing, although, in the one case (the gelding with the mega-sheath) the antibiotics and lancing might have been necessary--- it was miserable for him in any event.
Didn't know anything about a vaccine before. Anyone have any direct experience with that?
I'm hesitant to give a new vaccine without personal experience from those who have. I remember all the problems with the 7 way a few years back. One friend, a vet, had to give epinephrine when her horse immediately collapsed upon injecting it and the other friend's horse, a Halynov son, was almost paralyzed in his hind right side (she gave the shot in the right hip area) for a couple weeks afterwards. MAkes me gun-shy.
Also, it would be interesting to me to know what treatment, if any, had been given the horses who died. I actually heard from one vet (who did not believe in giving antibiotics for it) that giving them could drive it internal. It would be certainly worth an inquiry. Also, were they lanced? We've had approx. 20 horses with it when we were living in PAso as we were surrounded by horse ranches with showbarns (and flies) and pastureland---- hard to contain. Since we left Paso, haven't had it since--- and after 6 years I am just now able to eat eclairs again!

I agree with Bette except for the part about antibiotics. I would not do that unless the vet advised. Antibiotics tend to make the symptoms go away and in the case of pigeon fever I don't think that would be a good idea. It can go internal. Once the abscess is lanced we flush it out every day and keep it open to heal from the inside...Have never seen a scar from it yet....
