Re: [RC] new topic re green horses - Truman Prevatt
Ed it depends on the sanctioning body under which the CTR is run. Unlike
endurance there are multiple sanctioning bodies for CTR and they are different.
There is also some dependence on the ride manager. For the most part at a
CTR you get a time and you go out on that time, 30 seconds behind the horse
in front of you and 30 seconds ahead of the horse behind you. You can go
out a ways and stop and wait but you do leave came on a prearranged schedule.
On some very green horses, this could blow the brain gasket and it might
take quite a while to repair. I like LD at first for their flexibility. Just
hang around until everyone has been gone for 15 minutes, then saddle up and
mozie on down the trail. Plenty of time to finish a 25 (about 5:30 of ride
time for a LD vs. 4 hours of elapsed time for a 25 mile CTR). Then after
all that's cool with the horse, move on to a few CTR's to train them to handle
the being with other horses issues. The only time I've ever been dumped
at the beginning of a ride was a CTR on a green horse.

Why? Participants do it all the time
in the Midwest.
