Re: [RC] Saddle for low withered horse - Duett saddles - Chris PausYes, Nancy Temple is great to work with. I tried two different saddles. At first she thought my mare needed a 38 cm tree, but that was too wide and the saddle tilted forward, putting me in an awkward position. I sent that one back and she sent out a 36, and it was a great fit. she wants her customers to be happy and that says a lot! I just got the basic Rondo model, but I've put a snugpax with water bottle holders on the back, which gives me plenty of room for the "stuff" I need on trail. I got a red biothane bridle and breast collar from Nancy Mitts, so my lovely bay mare looks quite well dressed now! Oh, and I got from Libertyville their fleece whole saddle cover. I love those for English saddles. They keep the saddle from getting scratched up if you ever want to sell it again, and they really help you stick like glue! They are comfy and add just the right amount of cushion for me. They aren't too spendy, about $40 and come in several colors. The only change I made to mine, is that they have the holes for the stirrup leathers at the bottom, and I hate that. I just cut holes at the top near the stirrup bars so my leathers are on the outside and I have a little more freedom of movement. chris --- Karen Casemier <kcrazzmatazz@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: I would second Chris Paus' recommendation to look at Duett saddles. I have a very broad, mutton withered mare that I've had a horrible time finding something to fit. I had her in a sportsaddle for a while, which was just OK. It didn't seem to bother her, but it wasn't very stable and definitely creeped forward throughout a ride, even on relatively stable terrain. It also was constantly shifting from side to side. I also tried another treeless model, but wasn't thrilled with it either. I had also tried a wide variety of English saddles, including Wintecs, County, Rembrandt, Thorowgood (that was probably one of the best fits of all of them), and many others. I just got a Duett Companion trail saddle, and am very impressed with the fit of this saddle on my mare. Now, I have not had a chance to do tons of riding in it right now, but I could tell right away that the balance of the saddle was finally right on my horse. The workmanship is great for the price. I bought the Companion Trail model; however, mine is a brand new version that does NOT have extended endurance panels, as my mare is very short backed as well and also kind of scoops up in back. I do still plan on riding with a crupper, but I've already noticed that this saddle is much more stable than any previous ones. The US distributor, Nancy Temple, can help you determine the correct saddle size and model based on conversations and wither tracings. You can also try before you buy.
