[RC] elytes, salt, and supplements - Sharon SouleMy old guy won't touch free choice salt in any form. I give him 1 tbsp in his grain and he seems fine with that. Sometimes I wonder if this means there is enough salt content in our local hay and maybe I'm overdosing him?... Can you even get hay tested for salt content? I can also give my personal experience from when I was running marathons and ultras. I never used any type of electrolyte other than in the gatorade/water drink I carried (1/3 gatorade 2/3 water) but I did have a problem with my hands swelling on long runs. So I tried an electrolyte tablet on a 22 mile training run. It made my mouth dry and I was nauseous pretty much the whole run. The run itself went fine, just felt yucky sucky... I often think about that experience when I am riding my horse now. If I do use e-lytes, it is usually at about 1/3 of the recommended dosage. I do think they encourage him to drink sooner on a ride... Before I knew= anything about elytes she did just fine with no supplements.= Last year, having become a barn-yard chemist with a very modest= amount of "they all do it" information, I managed to make her= tie up after a very short ride by giving her 2 ounces of elytes= every day for 2 weeks. After that nasty experience I've decided= to get out of the lab and pay attention to what SHE does well= with. Better late than never, I guess. Does anyone else have= horses that won't touch salt if they have a choice? -Frances. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
