Re: [RC] elytes, salt, and supplements - heidiPlease Reply to: Frances gumbootballet@xxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================I ride a great big Appendix mare who hates salt and hasn't eaten 5 lbs. of free choice salt in the last 9 years. Before I knew anything about elytes she did just fine with no supplements. Last year, having become a barn-yard chemist with a very modest amount of "they all do it" information, I managed to make her tie up after a very short ride by giving her 2 ounces of elytes every day for 2 weeks. After that nasty experience I've decided to get out of the lab and pay attention to what SHE does well with. Better late than never, I guess. Does anyone else have horses that won't touch salt if they have a choice? -Frances. What I find interesting is that our broodmares consume some, but our ridden geldings consume very little. I chalk it up to their conditioning making them more efficient with their e-lytes. Dunno if that is the reason, but they consume about half per head what the mares do. (And the mares don't consume all that much.) I've also heard that they will consume more if it is available as loose salt. Have tried that as well, and have not found it to be the case in this herd. They just flat don't want much. Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
