[RC] Using breast collars on flat trails... - Jonni Jewell

My husband and I do not use them no matter what. One time my husband did
use a breast collar on a hilly ride, it pulled the saddle too forward and
the mare ended up with girth galls.<<<

Then it was NOT adjusted properly. A well fitting breast collar should never
PULL a saddle into position.(unless it was made from elastic, how would it
PULL a saddle anywhere?) They only hold a saddle from sliding back. But,
fitting one correctly, for those that do not use them much, is very
important. Many people saddle the horse (usually placing the saddle too far
forward to begin with) , and adjust the breast collar too tight against the
horse. The saddle tries to "seat" itself back on the horses back, but the
breast collar is too tight to allow it to do so, and then it can rub or gall
the horse. All of the tack we use can cause sores if fitted incorrectly. It
is not the fault of the tack usually (if it is well made) if a sore is
caused, but of it being fit incorrectly to the animal. This applies to bits,
bridles, halters, leg boots, girths, etc. and of course, the worst for
making sores, an ill fitting saddle. And as we are always reminded, never
try something new for the first time at an event.
