[RC] [Guest] Stifle locking problem - Roger Rittenhouse

Yep you got that correct - Omni had the locking stifle problem. He went
through 2 sessions of internal iodine blister to increase the size of the
inside stifle ligament.
The vet who did this gets about 95% success rate of the locking stifle -
cause by a too straight stifle, confirmation issues.

We did both stifles, two times over two months . He still clicks some but
no more locking going down hill.

Next have the shoer put 2 deg wedges under the hind . We use LUWEX rim pads
with the inserts works great to help close the stifle - hock angles.

After the blister is done the horse must be used to make sure the ligament
stays supple. The object is to make it larger so it will not lock on the
trocainer ridge of the patella.. ( all spelled wrong ) let the vets fix
that.

They must be worked hard up hill and BACKED many times . I worked him in
hand backing every day and walking up hill - even if we did not ride.

He would NOT have improved with use and time - only would have been more
lame and sore in the back.

It was one of the best fixes I did for him. It never has to be done
again..

DO NOT CUT the ligament. That will trash the stifle in a year.

Is anyone familiar with stifle locking on a horse? A friend's gelding
was just sent to a trainer and the trainer said the horse's stifle locks
up. My friend is at a loss at what this means or what to do. A vet
suggested iodine shots. (??) Is this something that will cause problems
down the road? Can a horse get over it with better condiditoning
