[RC] To breed or not to breed - A. Perez

I have always been interested in many aspects of horse-
keeping, not just riding, and one interest that has peaked
lately for me is breeding. I have always wanted to breed and
raise my own foal, and possibly to breed foals for sale.
Yes, I KNOW it is the most expensive way to get a horse, and
no, I have no delusions about making money at it... it would be
purely a hobby.

SO: thoughts? pro's and cons? Am I crazy? How long is a brood
mare 'out of commission' when pregnent and with foal at side?
Is it feasible to pony a un-weaned foal on the trail (not at
rides, just pleasure riding)? For those of you who breed, what
are the pluses and minuses? What do you 'get out of it'?

Bored and snow-bound
A
