    [RC] the 10 original rules of endurance - Michael Maul


    As a part of a committee Louise Riedel and I are on - the original rules of the AERC as stated in
    the 1974 yearbook came up.
    
    Louise provided these rules that governed our sport 30 years ago... Interesting to compare them to
    our Rule book today.

    1`.  All horses must be examined by the ride Veterinary Examining Committee 
    prior to the start of the ride and during the ride.
    2.  Ride Veterinarian's decisions will be final on condition and soundness of 
     horses.
    3.  The same horse and rider must pass all control points and stay on the 
    marked trail to qualify for awards.
    4.  The first horse to cross the finish line with the fastest time that  is 
    in sound condition is the winner.
    5.  Of the first 10 horses to finish that are in sound condition a "best 
    conditioned' horse will be determined by the Ride Veterinary Examining 
    committee.
    6.  All finishers will be given completion awards that complete the ride in 
    the time allowed for that ride. 
    7,  100 mile rides do not exceed 24 hours total elapsed time and are ridden 
    in one day.  The time for 50 mile rides is approximately 12  hours total 
    elapsed time but will vary according to trail and are ridden in one day.
    8.  100 mile rides will have at least three one  hour mandatory Veterinary 
    checks at approximately 25 mile intervals along the trail. 50 mile rides will 
    have at least one hour mandatory Veterinary Check at a location approximately 
    half-way along the trail.  Pulse checks are also strongly recommended after 
    long hard climbs or long fast sections of trail.
    9.  Abuse of horses, the use of pain killers and or stimulants is prohibited, 
    and all horses shall be subject to saliva and or urine tests.
    10.  Ride management decisions will be final.
