The concept that "To Finish Is To Win" is one reason why many people are leaving sports where winning is everything and enjoying our sport where you are a winner at some level if you meet the challenge. And Maria, you are right that many of us (even those who like to be competitive when we have the opportunity) can quote you our own career miles and that of our favorite horses, but many of us would have to go back to our records to tell you the number of wins or Top Tens. It is a thrill to "win" as in be first place, but to many of us, it doesn't even compare to having a "winning season," as in completing the goals we set out in the beginning with a sound horse that can go right on into next season with a short rest. As a ride vet, I've spent many long nights huddled around campfires, waiting for those last 100's to finish--and believe me, when they come across the line in the wee hours of the morning with a sound and healthy horse, they've darn sure won something, even if it doesn't happen to be first place!
