The other theory (which makes sense in my experience with EPM, which is
admittedly a bit limited) is that it only invades areas of the spinal
meninges that are devitalized due to either accidental trauma or damage from
spinal instability. It shows up much more frequently in horses that are also
more prone to the latter...
