The most common form of spinal instability is Wobblers Syndrome, which is
caused by inappropriate motion between vertebrae in the neck--this causes
pinching of the spinal cord. Many cases are subclinical (horse may just
appear to be a bit of a clumsy youngster) but still cause some damage to the
meninges along the spinal cord, which is where the EPM bug, S. neurona, takes
up residence. Serious cases of Wobblers often appear with similar clinical
symptoms to EPM, but are more apt to be symmetrical and don't tend to
deteriorate the way EPM horses do.
