Wildlife can also be a source of such diseases as leptospirosis and
brucellosis. My stallion Abu Ben Surrabu is now totally blind after a
10-year fight with periodic ophthalmia secondary to leptospirosis. He spent
two years at our family ranch in central Idaho as a young horse and
contracted it there. Our cattle are all vaccinated, so the deer and elk that
mingle with the livestock are the likely source.
