Wildlife can also be a source of such diseases as leptospirosis and 
brucellosis.  My stallion Abu Ben Surrabu is now totally blind after a 
10-year fight with periodic ophthalmia secondary to leptospirosis.  He spent 
two years at our family ranch in central Idaho as a young horse and 
contracted it there.  Our cattle are all vaccinated, so the deer and elk that 
mingle with the livestock are the likely source.
