Re: RC: red maple poisoning?
Acer rubrum--red maple, or swamp maple. Wilted leaves are the most toxic,
although there is apparently some toxicity in shoots and bark. The actual
toxic prnciple is undetermined. Causes a severe intravascular hemolysis
(the red blood cells are destroyed.) The resultant dumping of hemoglobin in
the kidneys causes renal failure. Treatement is symptomatic--fluids, blood
transfusisons. Prognosis is lousy for severely affected animals.
However--there are other causes of bloody urine.
