Hikers, Bikes and Horses, Oh my!
I suppose I'm just extremely lucky in that the trails I ride on are
segregated. There is only one place on the trail where we have to
share with mountain bikers, and I haven't seen one while I was out.
There are quite a few places where the hiking trails and picnic areas
are close enough to see, but I haven't had anyone come running over to
meet us yet. I've gotten quite a few "ooh, look at the horsie" type
of squeals from children, with the parents calmly looking on, and I've
stopped a few times to answer questions for lost hikers and such.
I'm very conscious of the fact that equine friendly areas are
diminishing, and I've written my share of letters to the powers that
be to keep trails open. When I finally DO get a trailer, I'd like to
have places to go.
I think the idea of everyone being outdoors and enjoying it in their
own way is a good one. I do encounter a lot of people who are scared
of my dog while we hike, and we try to be "ambassadors" for the canine
community. I keep that in mind while riding too, and try not to be
too put out when a fisherman near the lake asks me - again - where the
camp store is for live bait while I'm trying to keep an even working
trot along the only flat stretch of trail. :)
Moving off trail for poopie stops is a bit much, though. Really. I
mean, who could possibly find horse apples offensive? ;)
