This is my point--the endurance ride SHOULD NOT be the first time the horse 
has ever been in a large crowd.  Take him to local shows, etc., even if he is 
not entered, and work with him in the parking area.  Take him on group rides 
with friends.  There are all sorts of things one can do to train (as opposed 
to condition) your horse for endurance.  Your horse's behavior in a crowd 
shoudn't be a surprise to you or to anyone else by the time he comes to his 
first ride.
