quality of heart rate.
Another thing to assess though, and the vets are the ones that SHOULD do
it, is the quality of the beat- if it's erratic or sounds funny, you
can't hear that on a hand held. If the horse is panting heavily and you
can't get a good heartbeat, I don't think you can get a good reading...
don't know, not that experienced with them- but that is something else
that's good info to know about the horse. Also, if it drops and is steady
after dropping you know you should have a good heart rate, but what if
it just goes up and down? I would want to know that and like it if a PR
person tells me something in particular like they can't get a good rate,
or that it's hard to hear... My job is to gather the most info about the
horse in the shortest amount of time possible, and it really helps to pin
down a problem if there is something odd, in some cases.
So I am going to keep listening, and though we haven't had too many
problems with handhelds at the rides I've helped at, I still don't think
they can take the place of the human ear.
I think they are a good gauge on the trail, and also for training though,
and perhaps if I get to use one regularly I'll change my mind further,
but right now not for judging.
