Back in the '70's, one of my horses sustained a leg injury on a ride near
Seattle, WA that rivalled the East Coast rides for heat and humidity problems
(107 degrees, and something like 80% humidity). We pulled at the first vet
check. Since this region has mostly desert rides and since at that time not
as much was known about heat, humidity, and veterinary treatment of the
horses in trouble, the ride really looked like a war zone. I was SO grateful
(as the poor ride vets rushed from down horse to down horse administering
what help they could) that my only pressing task was to replace the ice on my
horse's leg, which melted about every 10 minutes... That ride was a real
eye-opener to a lot of us.
