Re: RC: Re: feeding before a ride
Thank you Susan, for the wonderful and informative response! I think
what your saying is correct. We have experienced some, not bad, low gut
mobility at times. Either when we ride harder (top ten'd) or it was maybe
real hot or one of our horse's are not up to the conditioning for that ride
or day of that ride, like maybe day 2 out of 5 days. Then other times we
just lickety-split all 5 days and nothing happens!
I think at this time I will stop the corn oil before going into a
ride on day one. Is 24 hours good? The rice bran is at a low normal intake
anyway. Normal everyday intake is 1lb of rice bran & 1 cup of corn oil mixed
in with their other goodies.
I've never fed rice bran or oil during a race day. They get 1 to 1
wheat bran with a 3 way grain that has probios in it. Most multi days only
have 1 vet check at about 1/2 mark. We do bring some grain, carrots, or
horse cookies with us and feed that along the way. The girls think this is
great and are trained to grab a bite while trotting along!
The horse's keep their weight mostly by free fed hays (their choice:
grass, grain hay, sm. amount alfalfa) and 3-5 lbs beet pulp (always hydrated)
per day.
You rated these horse's as - Katie Bar The Door @ 5 and Ima Liberated
Lady @ 4.5 last year at the Tevis.
I will let you know about any improvements :) or other wise:( by
changing the oil intake before a race day (or week). Other than that I think
we are seeing eye to eye on the rest. Thanks again!
