I grew up on a pony that required a switch in my hand to operate.  If you
had it, you never needed it.  If you didnt' she just wouldn't go.  No
amount of "over and under" with long reins made much of an impression,
but a switch was the magic wand.

Since I didn't have to use it, I always kept it in my teeth.  I learned
which trees tasted best and it's a wonder that I didn't wear my side
teeth down to the point that I could wear a bit.
