Years and years ago, I had an arab gelding to get his rear leg and foot
caught in an aluminum pasture gate. The gate severed his fetlock joint
completely thru, into the joint capsule! It was wide open, I could see all
of the inside of that joint! My vet irrigated with saline, then filled the
joint capsule with antibiotics and sutured it up. He put the horse of a 10
days schedule of Pen/Strep IM and bute. We left him in the pasture. The
fetlock was bandaged for the first several days, then it became rainy and
wet, so the bandage would not stay on. This was during my pre-barn days.
Anyway, the horse never looked back, he was sound within days, and has
remained sound since. The horse was about 4 when this happened, he is 26
now! So, don't give up.

again we don't know what further damage he has done to this leg. The vets
are worried about ligaments and tendons that could have been hurt. This
horse is 5, my question to all of you......what do I do. I don't know if I
should wait this out for a while and see what develops or if in a few days
if
we know that there is more damage then we can see, have him put down. Stall
rest is not a possiblity....they tried that at the vets and he has a bloody
face and is missing half the skin on his nose. >>
Big trouble. I'd give him as much veterinarian attention as you can afford,
starting with some regular rations of Ace. This is a time when you let the
best medical people you can find do their work.
