MAY '99 AERC INTERNATIONAL NEWS
APRIL 22, 1999 LATE BREAKING NEWS.............
-FEI Passports have been waived by the FEI for Canadian and US horses
competing at the Pan Ams August 7,1999. The AHSA originally made the
request and it has been granted. This means a tidy $500.00 +- savings for
Pan Am competitors this year.
-The 2000 World Endurance Championships will be held in Compiengne, France
in late August, 2000. The exact date and the date of the preride will be
announced soon. The site gained formal approval during the FEI General
Assembly meeting held in Qatar recently. Compiengne is located about an
hour's drive northeast of Paris.

Off to Dubai, again!
Cell phones, SUVs and helicopters formed the backdrop once again for some of
the World’s top endurance riders at the "Worlds Most Preferred 130 km
Endurance Race" in Dubai March 24th. Many swapped horses for this event.
Host of the race, Crown prince and ruler of Dubai, Sheik Mohammed (bin
Rashid Al Maktoum) galloped headlong under the finish wire on High Winds
Jedi. His time, 7 hours and 14 minutes. He was 15th.
You will remember that Jedi and owner, Valerie Kanavy, had placed 1st in
the World’s Endurance Championships (WEC) in Dubai in December. Danielle
Kanavy brought in 11-year old Brown R Timothy to finish 21st in the pack (8
hrs, 26 min). Two-time Champion Pieraz (Cash) and Valarie Kanavy ran a
steady race finishing 11th in 7 hrs, 9 min. Valarie said “I started out
slow, too slow in retrospect, and could never make up the difference."
Christine Janzen, representing Canada on Tais, finished 10th in just over 7
hours. Northeast's’ Steve Rojek and WR Peregrin (Hawk) were looking good as
they finished 6th in 6 hrs, 39 min, while Australians Shannon Parker and
Jennifer Gilbertson finished 4th and 5th just 5 minutes ahead of Steve.
Sons can sometimes upstage their fathers. With the hot desert winds
pushing him and generations of desert riders galloping in his head,
17-year-old Sheik Rashid rode his best race yet to finish 1st on
10-year-old Maradon in 6 hours and 18 minutes. Awards for this 80-mile
race, entitled World’s Most Preferred Endurance Ride boasted a purse of
$300,000 and brought riders from 10 countries. Word is that this will be an
annual event.
Fun companions, foreign travel, fierce competition! Rumors abound
concerning who will host the World’s Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2000.
The site will be officially announced mid-April. Check this column next
month…and get your passport ready.

Pan American Championships…August 7, 1999
Each zone may vote individually on the FEI ruling allowing them to send up
to 12 horse/rider teams to the PAC, instead of the usual 6. Several zones
report that they have voted, and will be sending up to the 12 teams. This
expanded representation will allow the costs of the competition to be spread
among a larger group. The Long list of horse/rider teams has been pu
blished. If you would like to drive or crew, or help in any way, please
contact your zone representative.
News from Canada is that the South Americans will be bringing horses, not
leasing local ones, as they are shipping horses to the adjacent Pan Am
Games. Endurance is scheduled on an “off” day from the Games. Expanded
International competition awareness is also bringing teams from Germany and
Great Britain to these summer games. More as it comes in on this great
race…..
Some vendor space is still available at the PAC trade show which runs from
August 4th - August 8th Sponsors are always welcome. For more information
on race or space, contact Myna Cryderman at 204-534-2390, fax 204-534-2257
