Re: electrolytes
I may have missed the beginning of this, but while dicalcium phosphate is
good source of almost (actually marginal in Ca) balanced calcium AND
phosphorous (22% Ca, 19% P), the fact that it is marginally balanced by
itself makes it a lousy source of calcium to balance an unbalanced diet
because you are adding almost as much P as Ca. As an electrolyte, do horses
lose much P in sweat? Somebody else is going to have to step in here.
With respect to iodized salt, iodine toxicity is possible, but there is a
wide range between necessary and toxic. NRC recommends a minimum of 0.1
mg/kg of feed and a maximum allowable of 5 mg/kg of feed. There are reported
cases of problems from iodine concentrations in kelp and other seaweeds.
