When I started in 1976 the only sanctioned distances were 50 miles and
up, but some rides had unsanctioned 25 mile rides along with them.
They were called "Novice Rides" in those days, as they were only
intended as introductory rides for beginners.  When the AERC began a
program for sanctioning the short rides they coined the term "Limited
Distance" because some people felt the name "Novice Ride" was
demeaning.
The more things change ...
