Re: RC: Farriers staying up to date?

Coincidentally, my farrier was just out a few hrs ago to replace a lost shoe
(the lost shoe had plenty of heel, which may be why it pulled, that and the
rocky terrain we were on), and remarked he had just returned from Lexington,
Ky (a long drive from Md) from a farrier's convention. He's "inspired" to try
some new setups in this truck that he apparently saw at the convention.
After reading the recent posts, I offered to pay for the unscheduled visit, he
demurred, but having been taught ridecamp farrier manners, I insisted (he did
have to prepare a new borium dribbled shoe and patched the tear from the
previous nail holes plus his Sat lunch hour that he gave up).
I'm lucky to have gotten on Frank's client list several yrs ago as he's not
taking new customers, and he was the third farrier I used after coming to this
area. The first farrier I used told me the the vertical cracks on the front
of Fix's hooves were from the old chuck hole in the pasture (!). Frank
diagnosed it as too long a toe, & voila, no cracks since.
Frank is willing to explain things & discuss shoeing articles I see. He not
only shoes, but educates me. He must be doing something right as my 3 horses
have over 4000 miles & all 3, from age 25 to 5, have stayed sound (where's the
wood to knock on?!?)
A good farrier, once found, is to be treasured.
