You are right that the "LD" concept as such was much later, but I do know that
in the '70's there were rides of less than 50 miles sanctioned for points.
Then when it became clear that these shorter distances were much more
dangerous to the horses, they ceased to be sanctioned altogether.  Later yet,
the "LD" concept came into being.
