The best thing I've found to help is to keep fly repellent on the lower
legs. All the fly stomping seems to reek havok on their hooves, loosening
up the clinches, etc. My farrier says he sees lots of abcesses just from
stomping flies.
Also, my horses spend the heat of the day in a run in shelter. In the
past I have put some sawdust in there to cushion the stamping. They do
have a fan to help keep the flies down. When it's not fly season, Kaboot
usually grows over the sides of his rear shoes first, but I've noticed
that this time his rear looks great, but the fronts are spreading and
cracking. I haven't been very diligent with the fly repellent, and
hadn't replenished the shavings...but that's where I'm going right now!
