Greetings!
66 Horse & Rider teams showed up this past Saturday & Sunday to
enjoy a pair of better-than-average-but-still-windy Colorado days at the
10th Annual Pawnee Grasslands 15 mile "Rookie", 25 & 30 mile Limited
Distance and 50 & 100 mile Endurance Rides. The 100 was the Mountain
Region National Series Championship Ride. Congratulations to all the
completing riders!
Pawnee National Grasslands is known for being dry, windy and flat.
While this year was certainly windy & flat, 100 yards from the starting
line was anything other than dry! Crow Creek, which hasn't seen water in
at least the 12 years that the current USFS Ranger has been there, was
running about 2.5 - 3' deep, and there was no way around it. With the ride
consisting of five different loops, and all vet checks being in camp, every
rider had the opportunity to cross the creek several times. Many took a
splash at least once, and a few twice! If only we had a video camera
set-up!! A special award was given to Diana Zettlemoyer & Khemecho for
leading the charge for the Day One 50 Milers to get across Crow Creek
(thanks for the song, Diana)!
Special congratulations to Tugg, ridden by Theresa Maloof on Day
One and Phyllis Arnold on Day Two, for reaching 1,000 career miles (GO
MORABS!)!; Frank Smith of California for completing Pala the mule's first
100 mile ride (she had only done one 25 mile mules-only ride previously)!;
and Tu Desireous, ridden & owned by Sue Horne, for receiving the first-ever
perfect vet score given by our vet, Dr. Ute Jung, on the Day Two 50!
Thanks to our vets, Doc Ute Jung of Country Companions and Colorado
State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital's Khursheed Mama; our
sponsors, Subway Sandwiches, Vetline Equine Inc. and Kinko's Copies; our
trail marking pickup "Nadine" and her owner Lisa Ashbach; and of course our
wonderful volunteers: Linnea Skoglund - Ride Secretary, Bill Prange -
Timer, Sam Blandon - Water, Randy Osborn, Theresa Maloof, Penny Skoglund &
Wendee, Zachari & Zane Patterson.
"(Rookie)" indicates first ride of the distance attempted.
Sportsmanship Award: Matt Miller, our Farrier, horse catcher & future Ride
