out on a trail ride. I feel I need this type of bit for control at endurance
rides, but I'm hoping that there is another type of bit that will help me
keep him in check when he's excited yet make it hard for him to chew on the
shank. >>
I have been really turned on to John Lyons and his methods in the past couple
of years. He recommends using no other kind of bit than a snaffle--and no
horse can chew on the "shank" of a snaffle bit! There is none! My arab is
fairly "hot" and though I've not yet competed in an endurance ride when I do
he'll be wearing an eggbutt or full cheek snaffle--I have yet to have
experienced a problem with control. David was taught to "give" to the bit
John Lyons way, and the man's methods really have worked for me and my goofy
horse. He publishes a really great magazinw (John Lyons, not the goofy
horse), it is called John Lyons Perfect Horse and the phone number for
subscriptions (I'm sure they'd send a sample copy if asked) is
1-800-829-2521, e-mail gallatinco@aol.com. The magazine is just starting a
series on "giving" to the bit--as John Lyons understands it. I've worked
with horses for 20 years, and the man sure opened my eyes to what "giving to
the bit" actually means.
If any endurance riders have experience--good or bad, with John Lyons
methods as they apply to endurance horses, I'd love to hear from you!

ps. if any of you see John, tell him he owes me advertising money!
