Dear Lewis: I have seen most all the Colorado work, and also the plethora
of stuff from Texas A&M. However, not much of either is published in
refereed journals, and I haven't seen anything by Slade in the last
1-2 years. The problem with many studies is that the design of the
experiment or the statistics are not just poor, they are misleading,
or wrong.. We (Virginia Tech) fed 14% OF THE TOTAL DIET with good
results as well, and I am a fat enthusiaist.
The old dilemma is this - quality vs. quantity. I am not saying
anything specific about any particular paper, but the public tends
to believe that anything written in a book or magazine is the Spoken
Word. This is not so, and a little information (incomplete info) is a
very dangerous thing. I never accept any opinion on anything until I
read it myself. I am just a pain that way, and graduate school HAS
taught me critical review and research and GOOD thinking skills!!! I
consider myself an expert in the field of equine nutrition - more so
than most veterinarians. They do not have the time to sort through or
gather the latest info - nor should they have to. Experts in
different fields concentrate on what they know and do every day, then
we all get together and argue!!! Thanks for the info....Lynn
