I was curious about the number of endurance riders who feed a
substantial amount of fat to their horses. Research we conducted at
Virginia Tech showed a glucose sparing effect in the blood of Arabian
horses that were fed 14% of the total diet of a corn oil/lecithin
mix. The horses were running on an incline treadmill in succesive
2 minute sprints (HR 195-210 bpm) with four minute trots in between
for about 50 minutes total. They had been on the diet for 10 weeks.
The blood glucose was higher at the
beginning and end of exercise, as well as recovery. Anyone who could
give me an idea of how much they feed (in cups or pounds) each day
would be much appreciated! Cheers.... Lynn Taylor
