Well, we did it. And Mystery acted like a well behaved trained
horse! I couldn't believe it (actually was a little worried at first
he was acting so calm!). The park was absolutely beautiful, lake and
sagebrush with a backdrop of the snow covered Sierra Nevadas. Karen
and Laura are such NICE people, they recognized me right away and I
learned so much from them. We had a nice controlled start, the
elevation change didn't seem to make any difference to Mys, Karen's
horses are well behaved and beautiful. They all became pals quickly
and even layed down and slept together Sunday morning!
On the 25 miler 33 started, 29 finished and Mystery and I were 16th.
More importantly, he vetted in better at the end of the race then the
beginning, because he drank and drank and drank. I think he could
easily have done the 50 and am considering the Lassen 50 at the end of
the summer.
I learned quite a bit...proper cooling methods, feeding during the
race, checking for soreness, etc. etc. etc. Karen and Laura are both
excellent horsewomen and Karen is an excellent teacher. Thank you both
for sharing the experience with me.
I also was able to meet a few of you...it is so nice to be able to
put faces and fur together with names. I think this is a really
friendly and wonderful crowd. Maybe I'll meet more of you at the
Mendocino 25, my next goal.
Take care,
Kimberly (&Mystery the Morab, #210M displayed proudly on his butt!)
