About twenty years ago, when I was a marathoner, it was thought that side
stitches were caused by trapped intestinal gas. The cure was to bend at
the waist and press in, with your hand, at the point of pain. This was
supposed to push the gas past the blockage. There were many articles
relating to side stitches in a magazine called Runner's World during the
70's and early 80's. BTW it worked quite well.
