I assume you are talking about what is also known as "side stitches." My
husband, who is a marathon runner, tells me that side stitches are caused
from a failure to breath correctly. (I used to get "side stitches" quite
frequently when I began running.) When we tax ourselves physically, we
sometimes fail to breath deeply. I find that relaxing and consciously
breathing from the belly is the way to avoid side stitches. Also, when you
feel a side stitch coming on, blow deep and forcefully three or four times
"from the belly"; then, consciously try to let go of the tension that has
built up in your muscles--relax as best you can. This can offset an attack
or, if it comes on before you realize it, this does wonders to alleviate the
pain. And, yes, as you become more fit, the side stitches should become less
and less frequent.
