[RC] chaffhaye--not "fermented" exactly - Mary KraussI may have used the term "fermented" sloppily in this discussion of Chaffhaye. My horse probably finds the idea of slugging down a big bin of wheat "beer" pretty appealing, but, I don't think that's quite what the company produces....I'm not certain what term is used to describe the process of letting bacteria consume all the oxygen in the bag so that there is no chance of mold or botulism toxins to develop. What emerges when one opens the bag pretty much looks like what was bagged--chopped up fresh grass or alfalfa, not dried, not subject to mold, just preserved pretty close to how it stood in the field. It's moist like fresh-cut forage. It's NOT fermented as in alcoholic.... I've always wanted to feed soaked hay but am too lazy--this stuff looks like a great shortcut, plus it's got all the original nutrient dried hay tends to lose in processing and storage. Plus it's reportedly lower in sugars than most hay because they choose to grow and process low-sugar varieties. Clear as mud.... Mary K. p.s. turns out the co-op 10 miles up the road carries the stuff. I'm buying two bags of bermuda and one of alfalfa tomorrow. I'll try adding a little each night to see how the horses take to it. Will report! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
