RE: [RC] Haiti -- Don't forget the animals - Terry Banister
Human life must take precedence.
Besides cattle, there are huge numbers of stray dogs in Haiti. One of the biggest reason to contribute to "helping" the animals of Haiti is so that they can be rounded up and innoculated to prevent the spread of disease to the people.
Every little bit of money that an individual donates to a foreign country is helpful when multiplied by millions of peoples' donations. However, organizations that have the volunteers and funds to work with animals, are different than the ones that target food and medical help directly to the humans' needs, such as the Red Cross.
We can still contribute a little bit of our finances to our USA charities while being good neighbors and kicking in a little from each of us to help during foreign disasters. We are not talking about sacrificing our own lifestyle in order to help others, as someone posted a few days ago.

I agree with Diane on the surface. Human life must take precedence. I recognize, though, that the people of Haiti need the animals of Haiti to survive. The notion that people who have (barely) survived an earthquake will have the strength to chase down and catch a loose steer and have the wherewithal to butcher it is, on it's face, ridiculous. If all the Haitian animals die, they will necessarily need to be replaced. That would be far more expensive than saving the animals that survived the earthquake to begin with. So, helping the animals to survive is helping the people. JMHO
