[RC] French Creek Horse Camp - southern Black Hills of SD - Kerry Greear

I know French Creek Horse Camp very well as well as the trails out of it.  The French Creek Trail is one of my favorite rides in the fall.  One crosses the very clear creek 31 times!  The deep pools reflect the red/orange/yellow colors of trees and bushes while you and your horse look very clear as well.  Most of the trails are fairly rocky but there is quite a variety and you can get some great climbs.  You can ride among the buffalo and there are usually a few old bulls that wander through the camp.

There are other great places to camp and ride out of the southern hills/Custer area as well.  I love riding in the Black Elk Wilderness area and climbing Harney Peak.  A couple of endurance riders from West Virginia rode almost the entire Centennial Trail (111 miles) this past summer, camping along the way.  That trail goes through Custer State Park as well as Black Elk and ends at the base of Bear Butte (seen on homepage currently of AERC).

I live in the northern Black Hills and we have spectacular riding as well.  We have millions of acres of FS and BLM land with thousands of miles of trails and FS roads.
