Re: [RC] more barefoot/booted ?? - richardson . carla

My 2 cents is that I think horses need all 4 barefoot, all 4 shod, or all 4
booted. Protecting only the front makes no sense to me, at all.

Let me say first, I have no hard and fast rules for my horses about shoes or
no shoes. I do shoe most of the time for many reasons. My horses are
always unshod part of the time. I have a very good farrier.

My question is about riders that chose to go without shoes, but boot in
front only part of the time, usually at an endurance ride or LD.
Often the hind feet seem to me to be very short, and the horse travels as if
it may be tender. (Hard to tell without being on it)
I've noticed several of these horses are having occasional hind end
lameness issues. Hocks or stifles.
I wonder if there is a connection between trying to protect possible sore
feet and getting sore in the hind limbs? Different gait or way of traveling
perhaps?

Any thoughts?
