Re: [RC] Automatic Transmissions - Truman Prevatt

Today the transmission/engine are an integrated unit that are controlled by the same sensors feeding the same computer. By doing so they can meet the pollution requirements. When you throw in manual transmission this breaks the computers control on the shifting. The proper shift points - up and down are important to keep the engine running in it's highest efficiency range. In general the the truck will be more efficient with a automatic than a manual.

The except might be with a 10 speed manual but those don't come on pickups. Allison makes a good transmission. They have been making transmission for heavy equipment for a long time. They work well and hold up. When one is mated an engine and the control designed as a unit you will get efficiency - especially anti-pollution that is very difficult to get with a manual.

I'd be interested in hearing from folks that trailer with automatic
transmissions. Like Carla said - what do you do going down a
long hill to avoid riding the brakes?

Well...with a regular automatic transmission, you can manually downshift it (to first or second) so it won't go into a gear any higher than what you put it in.

With my Allison transmission, it pretty much downshifts for you.

I didn't want the automatic transmission when I got my truck, but this had more to do with the expense of it than anything else. I had heard nothing but good things about the Allison automatic transmission (except, of course, for the price!). Unfortunately, you cannot get the Duramax engine with a manual transmission in California (it has something to do with the smog certification requirements), and buying it out of state and then importing it into California would have been a PITA.

However, I don't have any problem with having to ride the brakes going down hill. If the transmission doesn't downshift for me, I can do it myself.
